Circuit Breaker?

Featured Replies

I received my Minn Kota endura transom mount today, and in the manual it says Warning: To prevent personal injury or damage to property, always install a 60 amp manual reset circuit breaker in line with the trolling motor positive lead as close to the battery as possible.

I searched the part and found it here http://www.tackledirect.com/minn-kota-mkr-19-circuit-breaker.html?zmam=73201554&zmas=2&zmac=51&zmap=minn-kota-mkr-19-circuit-breaker

Do i need this? Or what?

Care to explain why and what it does exactly? I've never seen one before, our local lake rents us out the same trolling motors but use nothing like this

No, you do not need it - if you don't don't mind burning up your trolling motor, it's wiring, and perhaps your boat if anything goes wrong.

YES! YES! YES!

A circuit breaker will shut the power off to the motor in case of a short circuit in the motor, wiring, or controls.

It acts as a re-settble fuse. The reason for having it as close to the battery as possible is, if anything short circuited BEFORE the breaker, the wiring WILL get hot enough to catch things around it on fire. (carpet, wood, insulation, ect...)

I worked in the 2-way radio business for many years and have seen the result of putting a fuse/breaker near the radio as opposed to near the battery. The wiring was run under the carpet of the vehicle and over the years it was worn down until it shorted and burned a line from the battery connection point to the radio.

If the wiring had not finally burned in half, it would have burned the vehicle to a cinder.

You can get a breaker from almost any auto parts store. just make sure it's NOT a self re-seting type or the breaker will keep re-seting itself until it self destructs.

Depending on the number of amps you're pulling, is the main factor. I could get away with a 50amp breaker. I got it from Ranger parts and it was less money than you're talking ;)...

They do not know about these or do not care about damage. It is not one of those things that happens everyday. You can run a TM for a long time and never have the breaker tripped. You can also live in your house for years and never trip a breaker (in 10 years our main has gone once.).  However the time it does go, it will save you its value 10 times over.

You really need one. Yes there are a lot of folks who do not use one, and yes they can get away with it for a while. Sooner or later though, it will come back to bite you. I can tell you my new boat came with a TM on it and it has a breaker.

Cabela's has the Ranger style circuit breaker for $39.99.  I just received it yesterday and will install it tomorrow.

Good question though. Until I bought my first TM and actually read the manual, I NEVER heard of these.

You'd think they would include them with the motor.

Thanks for the input everyone, I do not own my own boat I just use the rental boats they have at the lake, Ill be able to just throw this thing in there with the battery right and should be ok?

yep. On myt old jon, I actually carried my TM battery in one of those black plastic battery boxes with the handles on the side. I riveted my circuit breaker on the inside of the box right next to the battery and threw a small chunk of wood in the bottom to keep the battery from sliding around into it.

Give you a portable self contained way to keep it all together.

So what is this exactly? I would just open it put the battery in there and be good to go?

Yup, Just drop a battery in. The two terminals on the outside go to your trolling motor and are protected by a 60 amp breaker. There are two twelve volt outlets, one one each side, that are protected by a 15 amp breaker. On top is a battery gauge that tells you the state of charge at the push of a button.

The minn kota one only holds a 24? I was considering the one for 50 dollars but the reviews on the website are pretty horrible and consistent... lack of space etc poor construction.. Anyone have any other recommendations or experience with the minn kota one?
