Lower Unit Question

Featured Replies

I have a 93 Mercury 150 XR6 outboard.  Changed my lower unit gear oil this morning and it looked slightly milky at first when it came out.  I think I might have a seal that is letting water in.

I was planning on having a shop replace my impeller this fall, but might as well speed that up and have the seals replaced too.

My question is....What would I be looking at out of pocket getting seals and impeller replaced?  I know you can't say exact but just looking for a price range.

Thanks for your help!

Going by your location, I figure you've been using the motor in waters with high salt content.  This will greatly influence what it's going to cost to repair.   It's usually about a three hour job but when you start dealing with corroded/broken bolts that time can double.   Figure $90+ per hour, depending on the labor rate in your area.

It might just be the seal rings or gasket on the fill and drain screws in your lower unit.

You should haven  it looked at, but i've seen youtube before that when you change the lower unit it can be slightly milky, and its not a real issue but better safe than sorry.
