Recommendation on tandem Kayak

Featured Replies

Hi there! I would like recommendation on a good fishing kayak for my husband and my son. My husband and our 2 boys usually fish off the shore of our local lakes but I'm trying to convince him to get a couple of kayaks instead. He approached me with the idea of getting a Jon boat outfitted for the family but I told him that instead we should get a couple of kayaks, especially since it will be easier to store and probably more affordable. My husband is 6'3 around 260lbs, and we have a 10 and 8 year old who also love to fish. The reason I'm looking for tandem is because I don't trust that my kids would be able to maneuver a kayak on their own. I'd be open to options of single kayaks that hook or tow each other.

I wouldn't recommended any tandem paddling kayak for fishing; too much frustration.  If you add a trolling motor look at the Nucanoe frontier or unlimited.

Tandem kayaks and canoes are called 'divorce boats' for a reason, but with the right 2 paddlers, it can be a fun experience.  A cheap entry is the Crescent Crew kayak.  It can be paddled solo as well.  Availability could be an issue.  My 8 y/o has an Old Town Heron Jr. I got him last year.  It has a little tow line for it.  There are a good many more, but these days you're likely to find your options limited in kayaks, jon boats, or most watercraft.

The Nucanoe Frontier 12 or the Nucanoe Classic/Original 12 will handle tandem just fine. I started out with a Classic years ago. I took my brother with me a couple of times and we had no issues. Both of us are 6' and 200lbs. The track system allows you to position 2 seats easily where you will balance out. Good luck, there will be some great memories made while on the water.
