New project boat

Featured Replies

I just picked up a 1987 ranger 373V and trailer.

The hull is in good shape, the interior needs carpet and seats.

The trailer has surface rust so I am going to go over the metal with a wire wheel and put a fresh coat of paint this weekend.

What brand of anti rust primer / paint should I use?

I will post some pick as soon as I resize. Thanks

Some people have used Duraliner or Rhino liner very successfully on the trailer.  It eliminates rusting and gives you slip resistance for lauching etc.   I am going to coat the inside of my wheel wells with it this winter.

an etching primer will do the trick, just be sure the surface is clean and free of debris, Krylon rattle cans work well, do it all in several light thin coats and dont rush the job, it'll look better and last longer.

I dont recommend bed liners for below water lines but a trailer may not be that bad, its an in and out thing...so it too may last. no experiance with it though.

If you can find it in your area get a Zinc Molybdate Primer best primer for rust that you can find. It is not cheap but a very very good primer. You will have to go to a paint store to get it more than likely.

nice boat. i recently purchased an 86' 370v. Got any pics?

I think they are basicly the same the same boat  except mine has the dual console. What HP motor are you running / top speed?

I have got a merc 150. The boat is already rigged for it.

Thanks Hawk.

I am just about 1/2 way finished painting the trailer after spending a couple hours with wire wheel/drill.

The trailer looks ALOT better now. Its amazing what a coat of paint can do.

i have a 93' 150 hp faststrike. top speed with two ppl is 54 mph. Average speed around 50 mph. Great looking boat man.

heres something seriously consider, a company called Vertglas. They sell a gel-coat restoration kit...and I have used it and its awsome stuff and extremely easy to work with. http://www.vertglas.com/index.html

Thanks for the tip. It looks so easy on the before and after, I will give it a try. The glass along to top of the sides is faded bad but the glass is not pitted. There is a little bit of pitting on the bow. If Vertiglass doesnt work, I will be sanding and compounding until it looks its best.

It will never look brand new, but I want some sparkle and shine.

The glass in the interior portions should clean up real good.

Thanks again ArcticCat500!

I dont think I'd be overly concerned with the bow looking to pretty because she'll spend most of her time under water.  But Im 100% sure your going to love the "sparkle and shine" affect. That stuff amazed me and the original owner of the boat when I was done.

Good Luck..take alot of pix you too will be amazed of the end results.
