Trolling Motor Shaft Length / MG VariMAX Digital Kayak TM

Featured Replies

Anyone seen the new MotorGuide VariMAX Digital Kayak trolling motor?  45lb thrust, 20" shaft, with the digital power managment.

Do you think the 20" shaft would be long enough to run on a side-mount on a canoe? Or does a 30" shaft work better on a canoe?

Thanks

Looks like no one has seen one of these yet.

There's still the question of the shaft length. This motor has a 20 inch shaft. The other options for a motor with digital variable speed are 36" (or longer) shafts. Any of you canoe folks out there run 36" trolling motors? It seems like a 36" would put the control handle pretty high and be uncomfortable to steer... :-?

Goose,

I am aware of the Kayak trolling motors and am surpised that it took them this long to come out with one.  Personally I would buy an appropriate Minnkota motor and cut the shaft.  You can cut the shaft to any length you want, drill a mounting hole in the top, shorten the power wires and you have  a Kayak trolling motor!  Use a tube cutter or hacksaw.  be careful to not nick the wire.  I did it on my bow mounted Minnkota Power Drive on my old boat.

Thanks
