Steering cable question

Featured Replies

I have a 86 Stratos 375-V with a 75 115 Johnson. The problem I'm having is it is almost impossible to turn the wheel right or left. It will turn but I need to eat my spinach before I head to the lake. I had it at the lake and it just completely dangerous to drive! My friend and I looked at the cable and it seems to be way to long for the boat. It curves on top of the gas tank and then curves back to where it runs to the steering wheel. What is the best way to fix this? New cable? (where can I buy one?) Run it a different way? I'm just stumped.....

Thanks for the help in advance!

Teleflex is the website you need to go to.  They have a measuring system that shows you how to determine the correct length for your boat.  As old as your boat is I'd suggest replacing both the cable(s) and helm.  No point in hooking a new cable up to a helm that has slop in it due to age.  You really don't want to mess around with your boats steering system.  Spend the money to do it right.

I'm not sure what type of steering you have, but I know I had a similar issue in my saltwater boat a while back.  Just needed some hydraulic fluid added.  Problem solved.  So if you've got a hydraulic steering, you may want to check that out first.  It's easy, takes all of five minutes.  And it's a cheap fix if thats all thats wrong.
