Trolling motor plug question

Featured Replies

We're in the process of upgrading electric motors fro a 12v 46# thrust motor guide to a 70# minn kota maxxum 12/24v. The boat is a bass tracker deep v16. The current receptacle is 4 prong and is wired for 12 or 24 volts. My question is will the plug from the old motor  work for the new one or do i need a new plug and receptacle? Thanks in advance.

I recently did an upgrade on my boat from a 12v to a 24v.  I used the same receptacle and plug.  I removed the plug from the 12v motor and placed it on the 24v motor.  Works great.  The only thing that matters is how you wire the batteries.  Use the correct fuse or breaker.  You should be fine.

My last fiberglass bass boat was wired that way, the jumper for the 24V circuit was inside the trolling motor plug. Send me an e-mail and I'll send you the wiring diagram for that set-up. Your 12/24V motor has just three wires.

If I was doing it and going to run straight 24 volts, I would parallel the two negative and two positive cables and install a pair of these http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/search.shtml?searchQuery=3by20&op=search&Ntt=3by20&N=0&sst=subset

Way2slow, the slowest speed on 24V with a 12/24V motor is usually too fast for calm conditions and an unnecessary disturbance when stealth is needed. Not hooking up the 12V is eliminating 1/2 of the speed control.
