starter question

Featured Replies

just wondering what the toothed thing that turns the flywheel is called and can i just but a new one or do i have to get a whole new starter, the starter has nothing wring with it the teeth are a little worn on it casing it to slip sometimes

I'm no expert, but I think it's called the bendix.  Normally, you either get the starter rebuilt, or you buy a new/reconditioned one.  I replaced mine last year, and found it was more economical to buy a new one from a reputable starter shop.  I wound up buying from dbelectrical, and they offered good customer service.  I believe you can find them online and on ebay.  They're located in TN.

It is a bendix and it can be purchased seperately. It may not be the bendix teeth that are bad. You need to check the flywheel very carefully. The teeth will not be worn all the way around. Look for a section sometimes two to three inches or more in length that have worn down. What causes this is when the area starts wearing the bendix and the teeth will not mest correctly each time the flywheel stops in that area. Thus creating a bad spot that will only get worse as time goes by. The rest of the teeth will look fine, but it will still have the bad spot in it. If you change the bendix and the flywheel is bad you will just destroy the teeth on the new part.

Don't just glance at the flywheel and assume the teeth are all good. The wear will be on the bottom half and possibly up under the bottom edge. Check it over carefully.

good luck.
