Mercury 250 efi vs. other motors

Featured Replies

I am looking to buy a 2005 Ranger Z-21 with a Mercury 250 EFI.  I don't know much about this engine and was wondering if anyone had any opinions one way or the other on it.  It has been checked out by a dealer but is no longer under warranty.

Thanks,

Eric

I had a regular Merc 250 EFI on my last Gambler (04) and never had any issues with it. Started every time with just a quick turn of the key and ran really strong, even on a 22ft boat with full livewells and 48 gallons of gas. The only 2 complaints I had was 1) it guzzled gas and 2) the sound of the motor gave me a headache when running wide open.  ;D

I've got a Merc 250XB now which is an EFI as well but it's a little different animal than the regular 250 EFI.....it's a lot worse on gas but it's a ton stronger than the regular 250 EFI.

Both motors were/are very dependable. As long as it's been checked out properly you should rest easy....it's a Merc.
