did you remove them?

I did remove them.  What made it easier too was that they are wood lids.  I glued the carpet down using a roller to go over it, wrapped the carpet and put a few staples in it with a nailer/stapler gun on the underside.

Make sure you don't skimp on the glue.  I recently did some carpeting and am wishing I used a bit more glue than I did.  It's cheap anyway.  Just make sure you use a roller like IDbasser said.  A rolling pin worked great for me.

It's not hard to install carpet but a word of caution look at the boat's flooring before you buy it, Most boat's that I looked at had rotton floor's when the carpet shown a lot of wear and tear.

Go talk to your local carpet store and tell them you need some contact glue and use that for your lidis after you dry cut and rap the corners use the contact glue to do your edges and the inside of the lips of your lids and use henrys glue on the flat surfaces the trick to the contact glue is to paint it on with a brush on both surfaces and let it dry for about 5min and when you stick them together there is no getin it off

Remove your lids.  Scrape off the old adhesive. (this will actually be the hardest part).  As stated, Henry's for the flat surfaces and contact cement for the edges and and corners.  Both can be had at Lowes or HD.  Get boat carpet, not anything else that has a looped pile.  Remember that all carpet has a grain.  Lay everything out in one direction. Good luck.

Are you dead set on carpeting? The reason I ask is that my boat has "Rhino Lining" sprayed inside. Makes boat cleaning much easier, you don't get as many stains (or stink) when fishing; plus it may save you a few pounds on your boat weight.

Rhino is a lot tougher than carpeting besides. It's just not as "pretty". It's not all that bad to walk on either. ;) Just a thought.
