Battery Charging

Featured Replies

I've read that there are battery chargers that don't do a good job of recharging these deep cycle marine batteries to full charge causing issues with life expectancy as well as performance. Is there a list of know good chargers or information on how to tell the good ones from the not so good?

Many chargers will have a switch on them for marine/deep cycle batteries.  You might try one of those.  If you have a bass boat where your batteries remain in place, consider one of the ones that mount in your boat.  My Dual-Pro 3-bank has run 24/7 for 12 years and is still going strong.

Most people are won't pay the $150+ that a good charger will cost, so as a minimum make sure you at least get one that's a SMART or Intelli charger.  These will be microprocessor controlled and should go into a float mode at the end.  Some of the cheaper of those are usually not worth taking out of the box but they are still much better than those Automatics.  All those do is let a battery die a slow death.

The charger should also be of a size that is at least 10% of that rated Ah capacity of your battery.

Thanks for the info guys. I have an old Sear automatic charger that I've used for the riding mower and some older marine batteries for feild use with the telescope but they don't get near the load the trolling motors are going to give the battery. I haven't taken delivery of the boat yet and won't till this Tuesday but I know the owner just bought the largest Die Hard marine battery he could get from Sears. I'll need to see what Amp Hour rating that is and them looke for a properly sized charger. Need to get a good one to make the batteries last and get them fully charged or pay for it in sub-par performance of the motors and early retirement of the batteries. Bound to be cheaper to take care of the batteries than replacing them before thier time.

I just looked at the battery specs and it states 105 as the rating. So a minimus charger should be 10 amp? Is this correct?

Thanks
