Comp Props?

Featured Replies

Anyone have any feedback on these.   I just chewed up my aluminum prop in some rocks looking for Iaconnili's hot spot at the take off site of last year's year end Alabama River tournament.  Depth went from 20' to 2' in half a boat length.  I was only at idle speed but too fast to back off.  I'm lucky I didn't do more damage.   Remarkably, the skeg looks untouched.

Anyways, the aluminum prop is a goner.  Took about 1/4 to 1/2" of the ends of two of the blades.  I guess I can keep if as a spare 'limp home' deal.   I have a four blade Comp Prop that was my old back up.   My concern is whether or not these things are adequate for full time duty or just for an emergency.

Anyone have any experience with these?  The motor is only a 90hp.

I use a 4-blade Comp Prop as my full time prop, and I like it. BUT my motor is only a 25 HP. My banged up metal one is my backup.

There has been a few threads on here in the past regarding these props.  give them a look on the search list.

Most of the discussion lead to using them only in emergency situations only.  If you are running a motor over 60hp I would only use these in emergency situations at idle speed.  There are a few different brands on the market and some that claim they can be used as a full time prop with larger motors.

I would not but that's just my opinion

I bought a comp prop last year and frankly it outperfomed my stock prop. My stock prop was a 3 blade aluminum but the comp prop was a 4 blade. It was smoother and I gained 6 mph with it.

I have an 85 horse engine on a 17 foot Bayliner Trophy. I really liked the comp prop. It is advertised as an added safety feature that the flukes will break off if you hit something solid so it won't take out your lower end.

I loaned my brother my boat and he backed into a log. Took off a couple of flukes. It did do what it advertised I suppose.

I did like it. I bought it from Cabela's. I'm going to get another one.

Let us know if you get one, which brand you get and how you liked it.

   Good luck.

Go stainless.

If you go stainless you will break your prop shaft or other internals before the prop blades. This is much more expensive to fix. I had a comp prop and like above I found it out performed the stock aluminum one of the same size hands down.

At some point I will get one for my new motor.
