Can weeds break prop shaft seal?

Featured Replies

Went out to Lake "O" on Saturday and ran some pretty thick weeds.  Last, night I took the prop off and noticed weeds were very tightly strung around and behind the thrust washer.  While removing the  weeds I noticed that they had an oil/grease smell to them, although I am not sure if it was from the grease on prop shaft or oil from lower unit.  To be safe I drained my lower unit oil and found it to be dark, but not milky or chalky.  So, is it probable that weeds could become entangled behind the thrust washer so as to break the prop shaft seal,  leading to water contamination in the lower unit?  I know it can happen with fishing line, but have any of you had or heard of weeds breaking the seal?
