HELP! 1970 60hp evinrude question

Featured Replies

Got a good deal on a old boat w/ a 60hp evinrude out board.  I went and got new gas and plugs,  put the muffs on and she fired right up.  Awesome,  except I could not figure out where the water pump should be pumping water out.  It doesn't seem to be in the normal spot.  Thanks.

My 1967 Evinrude 80 has a hole about the diameter of a dime about a foot down from the cowling. Water shoots out of there like a faucet. If water isn't shooting out, it's not circulating. Muffs won't fit on my motor. I bought a stock water tank (for livestock) and fill it to test run my motor. A few seconds after startup, the water comes out so strong I can hear it hit the surface of the water from the driver seat.

It should have the little pee tube for a visual indicator on the lower cover pan, but the bulk of the water is going to come out through the prop.

If you're not getting water out the pee tube, make sure it's not blocked, dirt dobbers luv those ready made holes.  An old motor like that, I would install a water pump anyway.   That's the first thing I do that on every used motor I buy.   The second thing I do is rebuild the carbs.
