Boat motor question

Featured Replies

I had my boat out yesterday, it would not rev up like normal even when I had the throttle lever all the way forward. I can get it to rev up fine with the fast idle lever.

Do you think the throttle cable just needs adjusted? Is this a hard thing to do?

Anytime you put a load on a motor it changes everything. Doubt it is the cable. What type of engine are you running and what size boat? Could be a number of things. Is the fuel system up to snuff? Are you running an additive, water seperator, etc.?

It's a 95 mercury 30 hp 2 stroke on a 15 ft Sea Ark aluminum bass boat. It just has a 6 gal tank with a bulb running to the motor. No water separator that I know of. I do use an additive, usually stabil, and sometimes seafoam. I am not sure if I put any in it last time or not. It has always ran like a top before this.

I use it on a lot of "no wake" lakes, so I don't get to run it very fast very much.

A motor will almost always rev when it's out of gear, there is no load.  You are basicaly just using initial timing and very little carburation.  The motor has to be in gear and load to tell how it realy runs.

You may have fouled a plug, since you say you run a lot in no wake areas, there are just a number of things that can make a motor not run good.  It will take a lot more/better info to even begin to guess.

Changed the spark plugs tonight, took it out and it ran great.

Thanks!

Sometimes we overlook the simplest fixes. Lack of attention and routine maintence are many times the cause for failure.

Glad you got it figured out.
