Stabilizing rudder for bass busters...

Featured Replies

I really want to make one of these for mine, I have seen the pic on the buster site and don't want to pay the price.  Does anyone have one of these they could send pics of too me?  I would like a few close up shots of one so I can weld one up at work.  Thanks in advance!!

Cliff

I just built one from pvc pipe & plywood. Haven't tried out yet I'll post some picks & let you know how it worked.

Cool deal, that sounds good, better than welding a bunch of scrap steel.

Hey Red,

Sorry I took so long to post this. Its been a busy fall for me with not much time for fishing. So, as you can see 2 pieces of plywood, 2" pvc pipe, 2 clamps, 1 nut, bolt & washer. Took a hack saw & cut the end of the pvc so the plywood fit right in the middle, then drilled thru it & put the bolt in. I got to try it out today & it worked great. I used clamps to hold it in place. I'm gonna paint it, then trim down the plywood to bolt or clamp it to the transom. I have a island that I like to fish but, with a 30lb trolling motor it takes some time to get there. I was able to aim the boat at the island turn on the trolling motor & sit back & relax!

Eztovaras - that is a neat rudder set up,and I like how it is removable.

Just a thought - a key feature to the Buster rudder  is the pop up ability, i.e should you catch a stump head on - it will pop up.   With your rudder set up, what happens should you catch every bit of a stump.  It looks like your boat would stop instantly.  You could spill a beer.  What if you're standing up?

It looks to me like the rudder works great, I'd  think about some kind of quick release feature.  Sooner or later you're going to smack something solid with that rudder and, like I said, you could spill a beer.

Fishes in trees,

Thanks for the input. Yes, I had thought of that. This was more of a test rudder to see how well it would work. My next idea is to put a 2x4 on each side of the pvc pipe & at the top drill a hole threw the 2x4s & the pipe, then put a bolt threw. That way it will swing up if I hit something & swing up when I pull the boat out of the water. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. ;)

Sorry for the delay guys, here is the pic of my rudder.  Basically a 1/8 steel plate screwed to a piece of 3/4 electrical conduit.  To mount it I welded up a couple pieces of angle iron to form a square tube, minus one side.  So it just slips down over the motor mounting area on the boat.  To keep it from sinking to the bottom of the lake in the event it pops loose, I have a short piece of rope with caribiners on each end, one clips around the conduit the other to the carry handel on the boat.  I have really plowed some stumps with it and it has yet to come loose.  It works really good!  I can now fish effectively in the wind.  A week or so ago I was out in about 20-25 mph winds and she ran straight as an arrow.

Sorry just realized that the mounting bracket is not in the pic.  Just picture a 6 inch long square tube minus one side.  Fits perfectly over that motor plate on the boat.
