Hookset with the Berkley Gilly

How do y’all set the hook with the Gilly, do you wait a second or two before setting it or do you immediately set the hook when you feel the bite?

I’ll post a picture of how I’m rigging it below, I use a 4/0 VMC Ringed Wide Gap on a MH Fast Action rod for the 130mm. It swims perfectly straight rigging it this way.

I haven’t landed a single bass with them, I keep getting bites but when I set the hook I never get  the fish. Maybe it’s just small bass or pickerel messing with it possibly, but it’s starting to frustrate the hell out of me because I see guys landing monsters with these baits.

Should I try rigging it a different way? I can’t use an exposed hook because the lakes around her have way to much vegetation.

Today I had a hit that almost jerked the rod out of my hand, I waited maybe a half second and when I set the hook there was nothing.
