Powell Max vs Dobyns Champion XP

Featured Replies

Thoughts on the Powell Max 735C vs. the Dobyns XP735C…. Trying to decide on my next purchase and hoping to get some input on these two. Looking for a new jig dock flipping rod.

I've never fished either but Dobyns has THESE on sale for 199. Built on the XP blank.

Exactly what I was looking at on the Dobyns website. Leaning toward the Dobyns XP bc I like the full grip. I almost exclusively use Dobyns and Powell. I give Powell the upper hand when it comes to overall weight, but the Dobyns tend to have a bit more balance. Hoping someone who has had experience with both rods can give a bit more info on how they compare before I pull the trigger.

PS… I also found the Powell Max 735C on sale for $180 lol.

Planning on this being my heavy cover jig setup for 1/2oz and 5/8oz flipping jigs with bulkier trailers. We have a ton of grass down here in SE Louisiana so I was thinking the 5 power would be the right choice for docks with grass or brush.

I have a Powell Diesel 723C that I use for 3/8oz jigs and 1/2oz compact/finesse jigs and I love it. Considering Dobyns has the 734 in the test cork lineup for $200 and I also found the Powell Max 734 on sale, picking up a 4 power and a 5 power might be an option.
