Quest Sportsman 12 - Opinions other options?

Featured Replies

My fathers birthday is coming up this weekend and he finally expressed to the family hed really like a small light boat him and my mom can get in and toss in the back of his 2500HD truck and take camping with him. He is mid 60s and in decent shape and my mom would help whos similar.

He brought up the Quest Sportsman 12 since its only 110lbs. Any experience with the boat, good or bad? Any alternatives in about the same price point ($600ish) ? My mom has the only one in their area on hold for 24 hours (next closes one is 50 miles from me) so I dont have much time to tell everyone we are pulling the trigger on it or not.

I have a sportsman 12 and love it for hitting the canals around South Florida. It’s light enough to launch straight out of the bed of the truck at a boat ramp or drop and drag into the water if a ramp isn’t available. That said, I would probably push them towards a pond prowler or bass hunter type pontoon style plastic boat. The sportsman is stable enough for me but can very easily get a little tippy if the weight isn’t balanced out just so and I’m in my 30’s. In my experience the pontoon style can be a little more challenging for loading/unloading due to being a little heavier but is significantly more stable for two adults.

I've owned the Sun Dolphin version and the old Coleman single hull Crawdad. I agree with everything that @Tdsmith172said. Great little boats but can be a little tippy especially if anyone stands up. I ended up putting both of them on trailers. When fishing alone, it was easier for me to load that way. Personally I liked the old single hull Crawdad better but they're no longer made. All of that said, I would buy another one if need be.

I appreciate the feedback. I looked everything up last night and saw the same as you both.

Called him this morning at around 9am and they were already there buying it so there goes the effort.

I may be on it this weekend, i'll be sure to wear some swim wear and bring a cheap combo ?
