Is line dressing detramental to reels?

Featured Replies

I use a lot of Blakemore Reel Magic on my spinning reel line in the winter time and swear by it. It keeps things softened up on  these Western Maryland in the teens mornings---Brrrrr. I guess my question is--- is this stuff detramental to my reel as far as the internal parts if some of it gets inside?

No, unless you want to repaint it.  Silicone is a superior UV protectant, repells water, and is a superior lubricant that isn't sticky or tacky.  It will only help your reels and fishing line.

Jim Blair,

I don't think spraying it on your line is going to get enough of it into the internal working of the reel to hurt anything. But if you have a front drag reel, you might want to check the drag pads for saturation of the stuff there. Depending on the reel you don't want silicon or any other type of lubricant on the pads.

Jim Blair,

Yes they do take a small amount of drag grease on those pads. If the silicon gets into them it will thin the grease and your drags will slip more easily (be like adding oil to the pads). Meaning your adjustments won't be as accurate.
