NC: Bass in canals off Hwy 64?

Several things: I'm pretty sure I saw a gator on the drive back from Hatteras in the little canal/ditch on the side of the Hwy, so that was cool.  Is it freshwater? Brackish?  Salt?  The presence of turtles suggests fresh or brackish.  If so, has anyone fished it and caught anything?  It looks like a super juicy spot but I don't wanna waste my time if there's nothing in there.  I think it's connected to the Alligator River?  Any help is appreciated!
