Casting reel question

Featured Replies

Looking for a reel for my 7’3” mh Victory to fish jigs. I have a tatula ct100 right now but it slips on the hook set for some reason. I am just confused by all the models. How do you break them down to know what you need (ie. DC, MGL SV,etc.)?  Makes my brain hurt. Hoping to stay at or under the $150 mark. Any suggestions would be great.

Check your knot on the spool. Sometimes if the knot isn’t secured using a piece of electrical tape the knot slips around the reel causing the issue you’re describing. I usually have that issue when I have braid on the spool but have also had it happen with fluoro.

This is of course assuming you don’t have your drag really loose. Not that I’ve ever done that or anything…

If you’re still looking for a reel for jigs, I use the Shimano Curado and it has served me well.

I have never taped the knot down. I am due for a line change so might give that a shot when I respond. Thank you.

I am not sure how this post ended up in here twice. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree that it is possible that the line could be slipping on the spool. The Tatula should be a great reel for jig fishing and I imagine you'll be able to get the slipping issue sorted out one way or another.

However, if you're looking for a reel in the with 'good bone structure' in the $150 range, my suggestion would be to check out the Curado 200K. They are pretty compact for a 200 size reel, and I have seen them new for as low as $140.

A buddy of mine had issues with a Tatula 150 that would do something similar.  He couldn't figure it out so he had a reel tech go over and fix it.

The curado M is pretty small for a 200 and it felt really nice.

I used Tatula SV reels for this sort of stuff with no complaints. I also would check the drag and knot (as others have said), but the SV really helps with lighter baits, skipping, pitching, etc. I have other reels that I use when I need especially long casts (frogs, swimbaits, etc)... but whenever I don't need long casts , I'm using an SV reel.
