A bit back, someone at Bass Resource commented how our human sensibilities might deter us from casting into icky water, but it's not icky to bass; it's simply their home. Well, some plant matter had fallen on the pond I was fishing this morning and it had started to decay, forming a film atop the windblown shore.

I remembered what the BR member had said and thought, "They might like being under that scummy film, as it'll hide them from the dinosaurs (raptors)."

Well, whoever said that the bass don't care is right. They were under the scum and I caught them on the surface and below the film. So, thanks to whoever said that!

I watched a little bit of the Bassmaster event this weekend.

The guy that won it was flipping into an area that was almost disgusting looking.

The announcer called it a trash or junk mat.

It was basically an area that had collected a ton of floating debris. Sticks, leaves, you name it.

Here's a short video showing it.

@HawkeyeSmallie: I wasn't casting into anything that thick, but not far from it!

Remember recently seeing Kristine Fischer using something like a 2oz weight on a creature bug flipping it sky high to crash through the junk on the surface. If I remember right she pulled out a decent fish from it.

If I can get through it, I fish it. If the threat of breakoff is high I just make sure the rig is cheap(ish) 😂

I am guilty of passing on the gross looking areas. I skip them because I don't want to get my line/reel dirty. Who knows how many tanks I missed out on 😆

I'll have to remember to go against my instincts next time.

Yeah I was surprised.

I've never punched in my life so it's just not a technique I use.

Maybe someday when I get a boat.
