Metanium DC Feedback?

Featured Replies

Any feedback on the Metanium 70 DC? I love the 70 sized reels. Don't really need or care for the DC, but like the size and weight of the reel and its not available 70size non DC.

I own each of the 20 Metanium, 23 Metanium and 24 Metanium DC, They all share the same frame, The DC is a tiny bit smaller due to modified side plates (widthwise) but hardly noticeable, The DC is pretty nice but isn't worth the money. Non DC Metaniums are the way to go IMHO.

There is no such thing as a 70 sized reel.  The 70 is in reference to capacity (in that 70 is less than 100 or 150) and that capacity can be achieved by making a small reel with a small deep spool or a larger reel with a shallower spool.  All the modern Shimano low profile reels are pretty tiny IMO but if you really want a tiny DC reel then consider the Aldebaran DC or maybe a newer gen conquest DC if you want a small tank of a DC reel.

I don't know where Shimano gets this numbering system.  It's like they use the 30, 50, 70, 100, 150 and 200 to have different numbers with a smaller number meaning less line and bigger number meaning more line without and actual translation to 70 = 70 meters of X line.  Might as well just make them blue, green, yellow, orange, red and magenta perhaps.

I have several Curado 70's. They are much smaller than 150 size Curados.

Same for my Daiwa Tatula 80's, much smaller than 150's.

You may have missed this part.

Shimano's 70 can refer to a small reel with a deep spool or a larger reel with a shallower spool.  While there are examples of smaller number reels like the curado 50e being smaller than the 200e, the 70mgl being smaller the 150mgl there are also examples of the smaller number being being the same size as the larger number reel.  Such as the metanium 70/metanium 150, scorpion 150/curado 200k, curado 200k/curado 150dc, slx150/1st gen slx 70mgl just off the top of my head.  I think all the 30 reels are also just shallow spool versions of the normal reels too.

Spool capacity is the difference. No company is gonna modify the whole frame of a reel just to sell it under the 70 size lol.

Own the 24 met dc, and it's my fav shimano to date. No, it's not yet buzzy.

So forgive my ignorance, but will the 70 cast lighter lures better than the 100?

I guess that's what I was thinking but maybe I'm wrong.

Technically yes, as the spool is lighter and smaller and accelerates quicker.

I picked up the Metanium 70 DC today before the tariff increase. Had a 20% off coupon too, so made it nice.

Its certainly a smaller reel than the standard Metanium and yes, the spool is narrower and shallower. Will try it out tomorrow.

The difference will be so small that you won't be able to notice it. If you need capacity, grab the 100. If you don't need much capacity, grab the 70.

Don't need the capacity. Its for 12-15# test max and I run 30# braid for backer.

It was enough of a difference in size to me.
