abu garcia 500c question!

Featured Replies

After getting back into fishing after 20+ years I have a question regarding one of my older reels. It is a garcia 5000C. The black model. I was wondering what the gear ratio is for this model. I recently purchased two Daiwa advantage reels with the team advantage rods.  My garcia is still in mint condition and was wondering if it still had a place in todays fishing world. I just cannot find the specs for it. Thanks!!

Tip:

Take a white marker (chalk) or some tape, set your crank at a horizontal position, now make a mark on the outside of the spool edge and the frame. Your forward knob is the crank count (make one revolution), while you make the one revolution of the forward knob count the number of times the marks on the spool and frame edge align. This will give you an accurate GR.

I think it is a 5.1:1

Hope this helps...

Check the number stamped into the reel foot.  If it's a 70's model those were often 3.8:1, 4.7:1 or 5.1:1 as reel mech stated.  We used to buy "Buzz gears" to step up the 3.8:1 models up to a whopping 4.7:1!

If it's an 80's it's more than likely 5.1:1.

Whoopie!  ;D

I have (since new) a 1982 Garcia Ultra-Mag and just had reelmech clean it up for me. He did a great job and it works just as good as new, if not better! It is a 5 to 1 gear and I got a Citica 200D, 6.2 to 1. You can really tell the difference when trying to work a buzz-bait or after you've hooked a fish and getting him in. I only have those 2 set-ups and if I had more, there would still be a place for the older reel. Granted you can get spoiled when you up-grade that much that fast, but I still really like using the Garcia 1. It was a great reel then and still is. 2. The untold number of hrs. spent using it and the memories that come with it. After this long it is amazing how well my hand knows the reel and vice-verca :).
