Planning and GPX file imports

Are you using a mapping solution like BaseCamp or other software to map waypoints, create markers, and descriptions and then importing the GPX (or other format files) to your units?

I have both a Garmin unit and a Humminbird unit and will be uploading waypoints and data. In the past I have done that just creating raw GPX files in a text editor, but I'm looking for something I can visually reference on my PC and then create the file to upload.

Might check out SeaMarks and OpenCPN, ran across them today looking for something to be able to view maps/waypoints on desktop with garmin.

I'll check that out. I used Garmin BaseCamp but it did not even show a lake where my waypoints were when in fact, it was a lake.
