like all things, I started with a few YouTube videos. :D

I saw a guy load up a big ocean reel with braid.  he said in the ocean, this could lead to corrosion.   dunno.  the big takeaway was his method of loading the spool.  (I'll try to find the video again. ). he was spooling hollow braid, but stated in his conversation it works on all sized reels and all braids.

he goes around the spool twice with the braid.  then he used a SanDiego Jam not which I thought was genius.  then the diabolical part!  he leaves the tag end long and drapes it across the spool, and puts the first wrap of braid all across that spool, pinching down the tag end.  I left mine longer and did a u-turn with the tag end and had two runs trapped under the first wrapping.  I locked the spool and pulled as hard as I could.  it didnt spin on the spool!!  I then put the bulk spool under tension by squishing two tennis balls on either side.   (threaded rod, some nuts and washers).  my rod was full bent while spooling up the reel.   I went so slow, making sure it was laying down nice and even.

the San Diego Jam knot he ties cinches down so hard.  it was kinda shocking.  way tighter than my usual uni knot I use.

opps video fail.  sorry

Everyone has thier own method.
Uni, Square, SDJ, Arbor, Alberto etc.

Some use tape, some use glue and some use nothing at all.

As long as it’s secured you’re good.

Shimano advisory on website:

"Salt is an aggressive material that can destroy your valuable fishing tackle by not cleaning well after use. For these fisherman we even advise to remove the fishing line every now and than when the reel is used in salt water. This to avoid that salt can crystallise between your fishing line and spool, because this can be a cause of corrosion."
