matt lure help

Recommended Posts

just got my matt lure male bluegil and i'm stoked. this thing looks amazing. i notice a spot for a treble. does anyone add a treble hook or not? i live in south florida and i will be working this bait through all kinds of vegetation. should i add that extra hook? is there any preventitive measures i can take to make the bait a little stronger before i get it wet? i just see that tail getting worked.

At first, I added a weedless treble hook but after the first Bass or two, I removed it and havn't lost any Bass because of that.  The bigger(what we're looking for right?) inhale the entire bait and the stock hook usually sticks them in the roof of their mouth.

Get a tube or two of Megastrike attractant as soon as you can and slather that gel onto your Matt's bait(s), not for the attractant theory but to make the bait greasy/slippery to enhance your hookset.

You can always add a little super glue in each of the potential weak spots. Anyplace that has metal sticking out. Use a toothpic so you dont get too much glue on the bait. I sometimes will run a stinger hook on top behind the dorsal fin. I will tie braid directly to the bend of the hook and imbed the treble just behind the dorsal. I like small trebles. Size 4 is good. I do put a treble on the bottom when I am fishing where I wont get snagged. Also LRod is right. Make sure the bait is lubed up good.
