Opinion on Rod Power

Nothing less than a MH/F, but i love a H/F for flippin jigs

I am looking at it a bit differently: determine the weight of your jig/lure and line you will be using  depending onthe water conditions ( small creek, lake with open water, heavy cover, etc), then select the power and action of your rod.

For example if you will be chasing smallmouth in a small river with 1/8,1/4oz jigs you will have more fun by using a medium or med-heavy /fast rod. On the other hand, if you will be flipping those 1/2-1oz jiggs in heavy veggies / snag infested waters you need a heavy or even X-heavy/fast rod.

It's not the bait type it's the weight of the bait and size of line that determines the power/action you need.

Just my $.o2

As a rod builder I would want to know........

What kind of water (ponds, river, res.)

What kind of structure are those fish of yours holding onto.

Are fishing from the bank, or boat.

What size jigs you want to use.

What size reel are you planing on using.

Tight Lines !!!

I would be fishing rivers and some reservoirs.  Structure would be mostly blow downs, typical river stuff, flipping docks, etc.  Fishing from a boat.  I can imagine throwing anything heavier than 1/2 oz.  Reel size would be based on what my reel mechanic suggest.    I have a round  baitcaster that I was thinking about using but am open for suggestions.

New_Bass_Man,

I would suggest that you take the reel you intend on using (hoping it isn't one of the reels were waiting for parts on);) and try it on any brand 7' Medium Heavy power rod, with a good Fast or Extra fast tip action, this will give you a good feel for the balance of the system.

If it doesn't feel right then I would switch the reel out to something that will fit your hand better, and still give you a good feel with the overall system.

If you can't find one then have one built to the reel... J/K ;)
