Is this a good combo

I all depends what your looking for in a rod and reel.  To be honest with you I would say no for myself but everyone is different.  The ? is what type of fishing are you going to be doing and at what level.  I was once told a long time ago when it comes to hunting and fishing equipment to spend as much as you can on the best you can the first time.  If not you'll be replacing it and it will end up costing you more $ in the long run.

Very true. If you find you really really enjoy bass fishing, you're going to want to keep upgrading, even more if you read this forum. Just make sure you will be satisfied. If this combo satisfies you and your needs, then it's good for you. Also, take the BPS/Cabelas reviews very lightly.

I'm taking a trip down TX...won't be bringing my gear for the fear of breakage. This is what i'm thinking of getting with a few jigs, senkos and kreature baits. It's only gonna be used for a day, then will be giving it away  to somebody.A bunch of my friends will be there...hoping to get one of them starting fishing. :)

I don't know about the rod, but I bought that reel for my dad for his first BC.  I was setting it up and showing him how to use it, I almost wanted to keep it for myself.  This is coming from a person that doesn't really like BPS brand stuff.  For the money I think it's a good deal.  It doesn't cast as well as my curado, but for a reel under 50, it was great.  I'm actually thinking about buying one for a trunk reel.  But like others said, if you plan to fish a lot, your gonna want to upgrade a lot, but for 60 bucks, go for it.
