Fluorocarbon Green vs Clear

Featured Replies

Im going to be buying some new Fluorocarbon line for a new reel im getting.

Wondering what would be better, green tint or clear line.

Im fishing mostly clear waters for the most part.

Thanks.

I've never really felt that line color made a difference, but I think that buying "colored" fluoro defeats the whole purpose of having an "invisible" line. Because I know for a fact that clear fluoro is pretty much invisible to the human eye in the water.

Now I might understand if you were fishing water that has some slight color to it or a green tint (which in that case a green tinted line would blend in better) but you mentioned that you fish mostly clear waters so just go with the clear. But like I said before, I really don't think it makes that much of a difference ;)

Fluorocarbon line isn't totally invisible under water. The heavier the line the more it is visible. It just looks like a smaller diameter than it really is. I personally love green line in clear water. The lake I fish is very clear for the Southeastern US. It has 16 to 20 foot visibility much of the year. I think if you use heavy line 15lb+ then the green fluorocarbon could be an advantage. But if you use light line then it really doesn't matter what you use.

Recently I've been doing a bunch of trout fishing and experimenting with different pound tests and colors (green vs. clear) with Yo-Zuri Ultrasoft.  The trout stream has crystal clear water and I've been using little 3" Berkley Powerminnows (awesome awesome baits for trout in case you didn't know).

I've found that the trout are sensitive to line color, that I get significantly more bites with clear line, and more bites the lower I go in pound test (makes sense right?).  I've tried #6 green and clear #4 clear and #2 clear, getting more bites as you go down the list I just mentioned.  Went out yesterday and got more bites with the #2 clear - and it's a blast catching them on such light line too  ;)

Just looking at the line below the water you can see the green a lot more easily than you can see the clear, so I'd say if you're fishing clear water, stick with clear line.
