Shimano Cardiff 400/401 For Musky Fishing

Featured Replies

Interested on your thoughts if the Cardiff 400/401 would make a good reel for musky fishing.

I like the price, $110 & it seems pretty stout.  I would like to jump up to the Calcutta TE, but that's way expensive...& I haven't musky fished in a year....sooooo the Cardiff seemed like a good choice.

Thoughts?

I don't know much of Musky fishing but I have been using the Cardiff 201 and 301 for swimbaits for a while now and I have no one reason to change, they are light, smooth and tough. I take them over the Calcuttas any time.

The CardiffA is an understated reel.  If you are a Curado or Citica user, the Cardiff will feel like a second glove.

You will not be disappointed with it. I have a 301A and I use it against brute salmon.  If it can handle Salmon, it can handle a musky.

There is a lot of bang for the buck in a cardiff.  It also sports the Datranium drag.  :P  Check to see if you can get away with a 300 size.  It ought to fit your hand better than a 401.
