Browning Midas combo

Featured Replies

I am heading to BPS tomorrow to jump all over the sale they are having.  I ordered 3 of the 29.99 reels advertised in F&S, have received on of them and am very satisfied with what I got for the money.  Browning Midas baitcaster combos are on sale for $89.99 (usually 199.99) so I am going to pick up 3 or 4 of them tomorrow.  Anyone used this combo and if so what are your thoughts?

Baitmonkey will be satisfied for a day or two.  I just looked over my "grocery list" for BPS and it consists of 38 crankbaits, 4 rod/reel combos, 20 packs of soft plastics and a few novelty items that will probably never get used.  I can't wait to let the shopping begin!!!!

You are not getting the $150 Midas reel that is on sale by itself for $99 and the rod is not a Midas Boron rod. This is another BPS Promo package made special for this sale. I can only suggest that you go look at the combo and decide if it is worth the money.

Jump in Muddy.

I had seen that the rod was probably not the high dollar one but the reel itself appears to be worth the sale price of the combo.  I will definitely check it out before I buy it.  Thanks for the response.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL< Micro put something up a while ago about this issue with a good suggestion. GET THE ITEM NUMBERS FROM EITHER THE CATALOG OR THE SITE, then compare them with the Item number on the rods and reels they are selling on sale.

BASS PRO IS NOTURIOUS FOR IMPLYNG THE COMBOS ARE THE SAME AND FREQUENTLY SWITCH THE ROD AND OR REEL DOWN TO A MUCH LOWER QUALITY PRODUCT.

This practice has been well documented on many threads here in the past. It is sad such a major retailer stoops to such tactics.

Thanks for the warning.  I wonder how they will respond if I pitch a fit in BPS.  I guarantee to let them know what I think if this is the case.  >;)

Well get on their ***** , maybe they'll quit trying to dupe people on some of their shady deals.

just went to bps and checked out the combo.  i was not pleased i ended up getting a extreme rod and reel.  for $30 more its a much better combo

anybody know how the braking system works?

I was actually rather pleased with the combo for the price.  I picked up 1 in a 7' and 1 in a 6'6".  Now the braking system is a mystery.  I lined the reels and have been throwing them out in the yard and I am pleased with the way the reel handles but am unsure of the braking system.  It has 3 settings and what appears to be as free spool setting on the internal braking system which is adjusted externally.  BTW I also came home with 42 crankbaits, 20 packs of various soft plastics, 10 Strike King spinnerbaits and 10 of the BPS brand spinnerbaits as well as a couple of shirts and some jeans...Oh yeah, and a hardcase for my crossbow and some turkey shot and a bunch of other stuff.  Thanks Bait Monkey!  I'm going back tomorrow so I'll check with someone there about the braking system on the combo.

I feel ya Muddy.  Your input was very appreciated and rest assured that if I did not value the opinion of the people on this board I wouldn't ask for it.  I found that everthing  was told was true.  The rod and reel were not the same caliber as what I would have gotten for full price.  I did mention this to the folks at BPS.  However the quality seemed to be above the $89.99 price tag.  I still may pick up a few better combos later and let my 12 year old fish with these.  In the meantime I think they will be sufficient for my fishing which does not entail any tournament fishing and usually consists of no more than 10 days a month in the boat.

Hey Muddy , W.C. Fields was right.

Went back to BPS today and got a little clarification on the braking system.  Apparently it is a dual setup with the inside ring being set to free, 1, 2, or 3 and the outside ring being rotated to dial it in.  ex.  If the inside ring is set to 3 and the outside ring is set to 10 that would be the tightest setting.  I'm sure most of you with more baitcaster experience probably knew this but I have never owned one that worked this way.  BTW after extensive practice with the combo I am still happy with it but I have never owned a really expensive combo so I have nothing to compare it to.  Then again I am pretty pleased with the $29.95 reels that were advertised in F&S so what do I know?  I did however manage to get three of those reels for $29.95 each and no shipping, I just had to order them separately and not sign into my BPS account to do it.  I also used 3 different email addresses. ;)
