First, Welcome.

Second...Are we fishing what type of water, what area of the country, spinning gear, or baitcaster.

You gave us no options to give you an educated answer.

My rule of thumb is:

Top water & crankbaits-Fiberglass rod with Mono;

Worm-Carrot rod with braid

and

I pretty much fish mono for everything. For baitcasters 12 lb. test.

For spinning 10lb. test. Although I am going to try braid on my baitcaster.

Start with mono or co-polly for everthing and then as you gain confidence in the techniques you will find a need to chang types of line.

For topwater use a line that floats. I use eather co-polly or braid. I prefer braid because the topwater action on my lake requires a very long cast and braid helps me get a better hookset.

For crankbaits you want a line with alot of stretch. Mono or co-poly work best for this.

For plastic worms you want a low visability line like flourocarbon but mono and co-poly will work fine to start with.

For the Worm and crankbait I use fluorocarbon.  10# P-line fluoro for the crank, 15# P-Line for the worm.  Topwaters I use 14# P-line Evolution Copolymer.
