Jigging spoons

Featured Replies

I have several styles and brands of spoons such as Dardevls and Syclops, as well as several others

and none of them come with a split ring on them.  Do you guys put split rings on them, just attach a swivel

to the spoon or tie the line direct?  I don't think tying direct makes much sense because the hole on the spoon doesn't always look that smooth.

Hmm, I don't use spoons at all when it comes to freshwater, but I do use them alot for bluefish, and when I do this I use a steel leader with a clip that attaches to the spoon, and on the opposite end a barrel swivel to tie your line onto. I wouldn't tie the line directly to the spoon though, I did this once casting it off jettis, and it went flying off into the sunset on like the 20th cast...never to return again.. and this was with 30lb test I believe.

What I and many others do is thread your spoon onto the line. Then, tie on a treble hook.  This acts as a stinger hook and eliminates the need for a split ring.

I always install split rings on my shortys. :( I have never tried it with the treble hook and I'm wondering how it will affect the fall of the spoon?
