Rod Help?

Recommended Posts

Ok folks I am like many others, a budget fisherman. I need a medium heavy rod to use for worms and jigs. I would like something thats pretty sensitive cause the medium heavy I have now is not. It has the sensitivity of a broom stick. Anyway what are some good rods to look for? I am somewhat looking at the abu vendetta. Are there any other good choices. I live in nashville tn. So bass pro and academy are close. Has anyone used the h20 rods from academy. they feel good and the price is right but I have not fished one. Thanks for the help.

Hey Clyde,

Do a search on this section for a post done by The Natural. He just reveiwed the Vendetta's and seemed to like them from his initial post. He also mentioned he bought some to sell, probably on the forum, and probably for a better price than retail. Talk to him, you'll get some great info.

I'll second the above. The Natural is tackle enthusiast who's recommendations carry a lot of weight in my opinion. Here is the link:

For $80, and this is the monkey talkin', I gotta go with a Damiki.  I concede that I have never held this rod, but they look so awesome that I, someone who is not ever likely to buy something unseen or untouched, is willing to do. It's that or the Monkey's whispering.

The Clarus rods I could recommend at that price point or the old Compres.  Both are sufficiently sensitive to jig fish with.

Although I have never fished one I did check these out at BPS. Sweet rod for the money, almost bought one. I would definitely at least look at these.

Definitely a Vendetta.  I'm actually excited about forum members buying this rod, and can't wait for some reviews.  The 'under $100' is the most popular rod price point, and there has never been a rod that performs like the Vendetta at that price point.  These rods can hang....and they look hot to boot.  It's quite refreshing to know that a $70 rod can still get me excited.

Absolutely...my opinion is no better than yours if we have both handled the rods. Have fun picking out your new stick...I love buying a new rod(s).

Ok. So I went to the tackle store today. I handled several rods. The cheap berkley amp is pretty impressive for $30 and if they would have had one in spinning I would have owned it. Anyway I store fished the vendetta and the clarus. Well I bought the clarus. Not because it was a few dollars cheaper. I dont know that I am really a foam guy I like cork. Anyway the warranty put me over the edge. Both rods look and feel great for the money. The berkley seemed a little stiffer in the medium heavy than the shimano did but thats all personal preference. So the final result is the shimano one. I also bought me Shimano convergence spinning rod while I was there. Anyway thanks for all the help choosing rods.

Thanks Kickstand, I was kind of torn but when I asked the shop owner about warranty he said anything he sells is covered by an over the counter warranty. If its within the manufacturers warranty time he replaces it completely. I dont have to send it back he will. So that sold me right there.

yeah...when i was first on the lookout for buying my first serious rods... i read alot on here and while there was always lots of opinions, everyone seemed to agree that the shimano rods had a great warranty and awesome customer service. so when i found one on sale (a convergence) i got it.  i loved it.  so then i started buying shimano rods. all the rods i have purchased myself have been shimano ever since.  i have some other ones - alot of nice all stars and some daiwas, but those were given to me.

good luck!

I am not even close to being as experienced as some of these guys here. But I have got to say that the convergence looks like one of the best values in rods I have seen. Its fairly light, at least compared to bps rods of similar price anyway. Pretty sensitive and at a good price. Anyway I am not saying I will not ever buy another brand but its highly unlikely.
