Spro little John

Featured Replies

I got a chance to speak with John Crews again today and we got on the topic of his new flat-sided shallow crank he designed for Spro called the little John. So of course I had to go out and buy one, and man this thing looks like one helluva fish catchin mahine!

It's the perfect size and profile for the water I fish and I cannot wait to tear up some Pamunkey river bass with it.

Anybody else tried this new bait yet?

I have yet to get to try one, but they are near the top of the list of my huge SPRO order I will be placing with their rep in February.

I spent a long time at the Spro booth at the ICASt show talking about this bait and its design.  My guess is it will be a great bait.

It will be too early for it IMO, but I plan on tossing it on my Fork trip in March.

I've tried one - not extensively.

Disappointed with the buoyancy - - - I think it would be a better cover bait without the heavy tungsten ball weighing it down.

Other than that, I like the action.  I can think of a lot of conditions the bait would work very well in.

Thanks String...I don't primarily throw flat sided baits in cover; I mainly throw them on rocky points and secondary points during the prespawn.  Does it act like a Norman thin N?  Wide or tight wobble?  I'm a wobbler guy in cover (generally starting in the latter part on the spawn through post spawn).  As soon as we hit mid to late 60's I'm throwing the RC...

Natural -  it has a moderate wobble....wider than your Zooms, but still leaning towards the "tight" action side of things.

I actually went out to a small lake yesterday to try and get a jig bite going. Well that wasn't working and neither was anything else I tried, so I pulled out the little John and on my first cast I had a 14inch keeper nail it and that was followed by several more...don't know if it was just a reaction strike or if it was the design of the bait, but I really got confidence in it now.
