Gear Ratio for my Reel Questions!

Featured Replies

I have had a baitcaster for about 6 months now, nothing special its a Field and Stream Verado 601 Med action rod. I only got it because i asked some guys which rod/reel they would choose, i was looking at the Abu Garcia MAX combo ( i love Garcia Spinning reels!) and they looked at both and told me to get the field and stream, and for only i think 70$ i really like it for a first time baitcasting man. But the gear ration is 6:2:1, i never paid attention to this but is it a fast or slow retrieving reel and i know some people prefer lower or higher retrieving reels for certain things, so what would this one be best for?

thanks

Generally speaking high speed is suitable for most applications excluding large swimbaits and deeper cranks.

6.x:1 is still considered high speed but is generally perferred for cranking...

In short the reel you have is a great general purpose reel. Burning spinners and traps is harder than a 7.0:1 for instance.

The only thing its not suited to would be larger cranks and swimbaits.
