Cranking and 5:3:1 ratio reels

Featured Replies

I just wanted to get some input from others on how they like 5:3:1 reels for their cranking.  I mostly shallow crank and have always used a 6:3:1 but lately have gotten interested in the slower ratio.  Are they useful for all cranking or just when your deep diving?

I use my Winch for all types of cranks... I just change up the rod based on application.

IMO shallow cranking doesn't need a slower ratio reel. The only reason i have one is for deep crankin because of the resistance you will face using such lures. The slower retrieve gives more power and less effort on my part to move the crank through the water. My shallow crankbait setups are all 6.3:1.

Most shallow and medium cranks I fish on a Curado E7.  Definitely like my winch or E5 for deep cranks like DT16 and DD14/22.
