Waterwolves
Does anybody have a good guide they can recommend for Lake Amistad in Texas? Also I know it is pretty far south so what would be the better month to fish Amistad Feburary or March? Someone told me you need a passport to fish the lake is that true? Any info would be great thanks!
bighed
I've been to the lake a couple times and can help a little. Maybe Matt F. will chime in as he told me he's fished there alot. I'd expect there to be bedding fish starting in Feb. depending on how warm the winter is. So I think either month would be great but I'd go in Feb. if I had a choice. Understand that facilities are limited around the lake. Better get a room reserved now if you want to stay near by. Anglers Lodge is a good place to stay. It looks rough from the outside but the rooms are good and the folks that run it are first class. There's a little tackle shop and they serve a mean breakfast burrito. Velvick's place, Amistad Lodge, is ok. It has a bar and grill. Rooms are not as nice as Anglers but it's a couple miles closer to Diablo East if that matters. Both have plugins outside so that you can recharge your batteries over night. I didn't use a guide but have heard good reports about "the Amistad Man" . I think his name is JC Gwynne. No passport needed but a Mexican permit and license are needed. In reality, there is plenty of good water on the US side and Velvick told me that the winning stringers rarely come from Mexico waters. big
Super User Matt Fly Posted November 23, 2007 Super User Share Posted November 23, 2007 Lots of big money tourneys in March. That lake also fishes big, theres lots of room. Mexican license needed only if you venture across to that side of the water. Guides are normally booked solid during that time frame. As Big noted, beds are very common in Feb with mild winters. If you can go and read the results and story of the last two years elite series on Amistad, you will see the first year, they caught them on beds all week, were as last year, it was hit and miss, mostly being pre-spawners. Its up to mother nature and always will be as to win they bed. good luck, and please post all the info you find. Amistad was on the list of possibles for the Third Annual forum get to gether, so any info would be welcome. I think two of the biggest drawbacks for Amistad are boat rentals, and the length of travel once landed at major airport. I'm 45 minutes from Fork if you ever get up here. Waterwolves
Thanks guys for the info. I hope I can get a guide for that time frame. I better starting calling people. I was thinking end of feb begining of March. Matt I have already been to Fork and it is a great lake I would have no problems going back but I just want to see a different lake this time so I am going to try Amistad or Falcon. I did find this site for Amistad and guides in general for texas. http://www.texs.com/guides/guide_search.cfm
bighed
I love Fork and fish it as often as I can. That said, Amistad is it's equal in most ways and is another "must fish" lake. The thing that surprised me most was the beauty of the place. The drive down the Dry Devil's River canyon from Sanora is awsome. You can just about picture the old cowboys rounding up the longhorn out of the brush down there. Deer are everywhere as are turkeys, etc. Then to look down at the clear blue water of the lake from the desert above is off the chart! You'll enjoy your trip. stumpy
Waterwolves. Have you had any luck finding a guide or setting up your trip? Me and a buddy will be down the first week in March.
