LOZ Creeks?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone knows of some creeks that flow into LOZ in the Grand Glaize area.  I'll be down there in the spring and I'd like to find a few.  I fished a tourney there last March and found some, so I have a few places to try, but I'd like to find some creeks coming in at the backs of some of those coves.  Thanks for your help guys.  I;m just a lonely Iowa fisherman tired of having my bass covered by a blanket of ice  ;D

And to avoid the inevitable answer, I've been looking at maps trying to find some.  I have two spots that look like creeks may be coming in.  Both located on Google Earth, so I can't really tell due to the trees.  The Hot Spots map for the area doesn't show any that I can see.  Just looking for any info that I can't see from the maps.  Thanks guys :D

Every cove with a V shape on Lake O has some run-off from a deep gully or a small creek. In the Glaize these are quite small except for the Glaize itself whcih can throw a goodly amount of water into its upper end. If we have rain, we'll get runoff for a hour or even a couple of days in all the longer coves, and that warm water often brings some good fish to the backs of the creeks. As far as live creeks go, not really any, but with timely rains, nearly every one has run off. If you're thinking this will help you improve yuour fishing, go for it, but I don't think it's a game changer unless you're fortunate enough to be there just after a good rain.

That's exactly the typ of information I was looking for.  Thanks for your help Nick.  I'll be there in March sometime so I'll stick to finding fish on the rock transitions and in any coves with warmer water.  Thanks again

You are welcome. If possible, wait until the temps hit that magic 50-54 degree mark.  Probably the latter half of March. Much more active and shallow fishing begins in earnest with crawdad crank, jigs, and spinnerbaits. The farther you go up the Glaize itself, the warmer the water could be on a warming trend. Fish the channel sides, but be careful running above PB #1 launch area. Shoot me a pm a week before you come down, and I'll spill my guts.

Nick is right on about the water flowage. But it all depends when you go down and the conditions. Be careful not to pigeon-hole yourself. If you don't get your rain runoff, it may be foolish to commit to those creeks all or most of a day. Obviously you can go back and try a few just to see, but if conditions aren't right and you don't get bit or only catch small keeper fish, get outta there.

In March, there are times you can catch quality fish from those creeks, but most of March your quality fish are deeper and main lake. In fact, there are times in March where the Glaize is the toughest area of the lake.

Unfortunately, I'm going down to help prefish for the college tournament there.  The tournament is mid-March sometime, so I'll be down there one of the first two weekends.  Hopefully we have a decent spring so the water is relatively warm when we get down there.  Last year I fished in that tourney and outside temps were in the low 70s the day before.  It never got above 40 during the tournament.  Talk about a cold front!  I think water temps were in the mid-40s and we still found a few fish.  Hopefully it's a little warmer than that this year.
