jaystraw
**I've just updated this thread instead of starting a new one. I've never been there, but the wife and I are heading to the Bahamas in March and we are staying athe Sheraton in Nassau. I'm really excited to try some salt water fishing down there. Does anyone have any helpful tips as far as what types of fish I should pursue, and any good ideas on guides/charters. I'm thinking I'd like to catch a tarpon and whatever else I can. Thank you so much for any help!
bigbaitfisher
You'll really enjoy it down there. The Sheraton is a great place to stay. I've been there three times. As far as fishing goes, I BELIEVE that they do NOT allow "shore fishing" in the Bahamas on your own. There's no tourist money in that. There are, I believe, 4 charter boats near the premises...within walking distance of the hotel, that will take you out for whatever is in the area. If that doesn't sound good, there are boats in the Straw Market who will take you out. Usually for Mahi-Mahi, but again, it depends on what is running. The straw market is a great place that I'm sure your wife will want to visit at least once. Enjoy it down there! Any other questions, PM me! I rarely check threads anymore. jaystraw
Just got back from Nassau yesterday, and it was a complete blast. We go out fishing twice. One day we chartered a boat with about 4 other people. We all caught fish, with a total of about 10 skipjack and yellowfin tuna. The boat was called the Kingfisher. The second day my wife and I chartered a boat for a half day from 1-5pm, for just the two of us. We had to make a pretty long run out to the fishing area (about an hour), but we managed to land one 45 inch Mahi-Mahi, and another slightly smaller one around 35 inches. Probably about 30-35 pounds and 15-20 pounds respectively. The bigger one put up a heck of a fight...I was suprised at how tough it really was. We kept some of the smaller fish and gave the bigger one to the boat. We brought it to a Lucianos and they cooked it for her. It was great! Here are a few pics. Enjoy!
