Susquehanna River Put Ins

Featured Replies

Hey fellas. My dad and I live in Northern Virginia and enjoy wade fishing for smallies on the Rap (Fredericksburg/Culpepper) and the James river (Pony Pasture). But we are looking to further our fun with bronzebacks and have heard awesome things about The Sussy. Any advice as far as put ins for a Lowe's Fishing Boat? It's a 17' two seater, can't exactly take the highest and roughest waters around but we put it at Leesylvania on the Potomac quite a bit and Lake Anna. So does anyone know of any good launch area in MD or PA that wouldn't be too far a drive (we live 20 mins south of dc)? Anything between 1-2 and a half hour drive wouldn't be terribly bad. Any help would be appreciated guys.

And any advice as to whether it's tidal or non tidal at the put in, where would be the best place to start out would be or as to which way to head (down river, up river, creeks, tributaries, etc). Also when the bite should pick back up here would be helpful too, just an estimated time or something.  Thanks for any info fellas.

i never fished it before but i have a trip planned for in may   my neighbor always fishes it    he told me he fishes practically the entire river but the best section is above harrisburg somewhere  and i think there is a launch up there somewhere  i will keep u posted on how i do when i go

I think just about anywhere on the Susquehanna is good.  I live just below the headwaters near Cooperstown, NY (yep the beginning of such a great river) and it is loaded with smallies.  It starts out slow and narrow and goes about 15 miles until it runs into Goodyear Lake and from there it picks up speed and begins to get much larger.  The entire section in NY has great smallmouth fishing.  When I lived in PA, I did not get to fish it that much (unfortunately), but most areas have great fishing.  Harrisburg area is good, near Williamsport, at the confluence of Penns Creek.  There are launches all along the river.  Check with the PA Fish and Boat Commission, they will be able to help.  Just be careful since some areas can be shallow.

Thanks for the info on PA Cujo.  I'm gonna check with them and try and find a listing so my dad and I can find the closest/best launch possible for our 17' Lowe's Fishing Boat.

hey cujo   what baits do u use?  since im going on my buddy's boat i will be limited to the tackle to bring   just wondering if there is any baits i absolutly most take   thanks

I have had luck with small crankbaits, especially Rapalas.  Tube baits work well too.  Flukes can be productive, but Rapalas are by far my favorite.

Good Luck!  and Tight Lines!

ok cool  i was actually thinking that smaller profile cranks would produce pretty good there   thanks
