Oneida Lake

Featured Replies

I've been fishing Oneida lake for the past year. I am going for a week this July. I will be right in Bernhard Bay. I've never fished this area of the lake and was wondering what kinda of colors and lures are good for bass, particularly smallmouth, in this area. I've fished a lot around big bay, and the channel near there in the summer and perch/crawfish colored crankbaits running 5-7' worked well in the main lake. Any in put would be great thanks!

Haven't had the opportunity to fish there yet, but I would imagine those same baits would work there as well.  They had a B.A.S.S. Tournament there last year maybe you can dig up some information on what was being used and where.  Not sure if you can just trying to help out as much as possible.  Good Luck!

Look for humps tha come up close enough to the surface to have weeds on them.  Color is less iimportant than finding the fish and getting your lure to the right depth.

My favorite lure for Oneida smallies is a quarter oz lipless crankbait in firetiger.  But if the bass are up in the water like early in the morning they will clobber a chartreuse spinnerbait, jerkbaits, and even a Rapala twitched on the surface.

But the real key is to find structure.

Check out Damons Point- have had great success there early with top water buzz baits (neon green strike king) .  Also had been getting bit on yamamoto green pumpkin crawfish, on a slider hook.  If I was going there in the near future, I'd start there.  Seemed to do well on anything green pumpkin.  Tubes, brush hogs, etc.  Watch the rocks- have heard horror stories about damaged boats.  Also fished across the lake at Cleveland- there is a rock jetty over there- be careful , but seemed to hold a nice limit of fish.  Good luck-  ;)
