spots...in central pa

Featured Replies

well yesterday me and mobydick went around lookin for new places to fish. we tried 3 ponds before we caught anything. but when we did we were kinda stunned to see what they were. every one we caught was spotted bass the biggest probably being around 14". all together we caught 10 in about thirty minutes. but the weird thing other than them bein spots was that they had red on their upper lips every one of them did. is this normal? and if not what does it result from?

If you were fishing a pond, I would be highly surprised if you were catching spots. Spotted Bass are only found in larger lakes or rivers for the most part, much like smallmouths are rarely found in ponds but only lakes and rivers. Throw that in with the fact that spotted bass are not native to the Juniata River or any other Atlantic Drainage river system, it seems like you got an ID mistake. Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass will sometimes hybridize producing what some guys call a mean mouth bass... They can sometimes look like spotted bass. Perhaps that is what you are catching, but this hybridization is not very common so the fact that you say you caught 10 of them kinda precludes them as well. Take a picture the next time you catch one and maybe I or someone else on here can help you with an identification...
