Lake Champlain question

Featured Replies

I am planning on fishing lake champlain around Hwy2, (felixburg NY-north Hero Vt) do I need to buy fishing permits from both states? A friend of mine told me that you only need one or the other.

Does anyone know?

Vermont and NY have had a reciprocal license agreement for Champlain for a few years.  There are some exceptions--a NY license is needed for South Bay and rivers that enter on the NY side, a VT license is required for the Inland Sea (the northeastern section of the lake).  I don't know where Felixberg is, but if you are in the North Hero area, you will want to get a Vermont license.  You can essentially fish the whole lake with it (South Bay is like 100 miles away).  You can buy a VT license online and print it out.  Google VTfishandwildlife.

Where are you staying?  I might be able to give you some suggestions if needed.

A VT license will give you access to almost the whole lake.  You just can't go up NY tribs, although you can fish the mouth of the tribs.  South Bay in NY is so far south of where you will be, I would not worry about that.

Will be at Champlain...out of TIconderoga June 20th till the 24th...if anyone wants to meet up.  PM me.  Psyched to ROCK Em'

I can never figure out why no one....I mean NO ONE...ever talks about Champlain????  Best fishery in the East....( no I haven't fished them all), yet no real interest from many guys.  LAKE CHAMPLAIN RULES....IF YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN UP THERE....YOU GOTTA GO!

Could never understand it???????  Oh well...more bass for Horton and myself!

its got to be the best kept secret in noth america

Good point. I just can't seem to understand (honestly) when there is a Champlain thread, it gets 2-3 responses...then heads to the back of the line. I guess i agree with you...THERE ARE NO BASS IN LAKE CHAMPLAIN!

Here's a nice largie from down towards South Bay. We hit them on every concrete marker buoy. Was a great pattern for a few days.

Being a local, I don't think Champlain is a secret.  The lake gets serious pressure on the weekends for certain.  I love having it in my back yard so to speak (I actually live about 8 miles from the lake).  Wish I had a better boat to fish it with.  I use a canoe so that kind of limits what kind of days I can go out on it and how far I can go, but I get out with friends as often as I can.  I used to fish with my uncle until he passed away last March, and he would always say "If heaven is not like Champlain, then I don't want to go."

hey UPS Vt,

what part of champlain do you live near? I will PM you the next time I get out that way. I just bought a boat last year, befor that I also fished in a canoe, better than fishing from shore but not not the same as fishing in a boat.

I live near the southern part of the lake.  I usually launch my canoe in Shoreham, just across for the Ticonderoga launch.
