best deep crankbait around cover?

Featured Replies

i just got a lucky craft flat CBDR and i really like the look of it. i haven't used deep crankbaits that much and i heard this one isn't very good around cover. i want to get a floating deep running crankbait that i can pitch into cover like trees and down logs. what are the best ones for this situation? thanks

Why would you need a deep runner that you can pitch into trees? You would want a square bill crank for that. Lucky Craft Rick Clunn 2.5 and 3.5 square bill would be great for this application and are on sale at BPS.

If you are astrictly looking for a crank that gets the job done deep go with Normans DD22. These cranks are hard to beat for deep water cranking. I recommend the colors Slick, Lavander Shad, and Suicide.

i was going to order some normans from tackle warehosue but didn't know what ones to get. the lucky craft i got was in lavender shad color. i'm going to fish it on deep drop offs and i want to bounce it off of the structure. i used to do that with good results but lost the bait.

Bagley's Original Deep Diver and Rapala DT16, though it's a little flat sided.

Rule of thumb: The fatter the crankbait, the better deflection off cover like stumps, brush, and rocks.

DD22 Norman is your crank. It is a big crankbait so make sure you equipment can handle it. :o

I like the Bomber Fat Free Shad.  Dives to  about 18' and has a wide lip to help it bounce off cover. :)

The Rapala DT's are great too for catching fish.  But the durability on them is terrible.  The lips crack off of them right where they join the lure after a couple hours of deep crankin'.  I wish they lasted longer but I can't afford to buy something that is so short lived at that price. >;)

I like the Norman DD22 too, but it is a little more effort to crank than the other two, which adds up after a long day of crankin' :o

Really? I've got some that I've had for a few years and have stood up to hours of deep, speed cranking, in the rocky stuff.

I'm not sure about the whole "pitching deep cranks" thing.....but there's several deep cranks that work well around cover.

Marty Burns (aka Big M in the tacklemaking forum) makes some killer deep cranks - - just about any depth or style you want.

The Poe's Competition Cedars line of cranks is also great - - I've had some typical Poe's finish splitting problems with them, but they are fish catching machines.

Also - - just started using last year - the Jackall Muscle Deep 15+.....very good little deep crank, and excellent around cover.

Lure Jehnsen Hot Lips are great, as are the deeper diving bomber fat a's. Bass Pro Shops Deep Nitro Crank is also worth a look.
