July Detroit River Help

Featured Replies

I will be fishing a FLW College Fishing event at the Detroit River on July 16th. I have never been to this place, what should I expect? What kind of baits work best there? I am a college student just recently exposed to tournament fishing and any help given would be greatly appreciated. PS...We are not allowed to fish Canadian waters, St. Clair, or Erie Thank You!

There's a good amount of current flowing through that river. If you are using bottom contact lures be prepared to bring "extras"....because you will lose a bunch.

I did well on tubes, drop shot and weightless worms.

As far as which spots to fish I can't help you there...My buddy did the boat navigating.

dw: I live in Windsor, bordered by the Detroit River on 2 sides. What are the cutoff lines at each end of the river for you? south end is most important. if launching from Trenton, that is the lower end of the river. with your restrictions, that end is best anyways.

you will most likely be fishing for smallies but there are some quality LM in the lower river as well.

stay in touch.

Hey, last year I had the privilege of joining the FLW's Michigan BFL staff and will be with them this year as well. I was up there quite a bit with those tournies and made my way up there to fun fish as well. Smallmouth heaven as far as I'm concerned.

I'll be making my way up there more than once before your tourney-time roles around and will keep ya as up-to-date as I can. Tubes, drop-shots, cranks, and rattletraps score big-time up that way. I can go ahead and p.m. ya a boatload of info if you'd like, including more specifics.

Best of luck on your research-phase!

This has the map with the gps coordinates of the cutoff line.

Thanks for the help guys!  I have plenty of time to think and plan for this event, but there are a lot of sales going on now and I could capitalize on them while they last.
