Aquia Creek and Harbour

Recommended Posts

How is the fishing in this area?  It looks like it has a lot of pads and grass so I would think there would be good frog fishing here.  Thoughts?  I am thinking of puting my canoe in at Aquia Harbour Marina so I can fish those pads and grass this weekend.  The canoe allows me to cruise right into the middle of them and fish.

Ron,

The fishing there is excellent. In fact I may very well be there this weekend on Sunday if I don't go somewhere else. My friend has a camper, boat and slip at Holiday Harbour right across from Aquia Harbor, and I've been there quite a few times this year, every time with pretty good luck. I nailed this guy a few weeks ago in the evening, (thats my buddy lipping it) and he caught a 4lb 2oz fish last weekend. They are everywhere in the lilly pads. Good luck if you go.

The best pads are the ones along the right side of the channel from the marina and on downstream with the two sharp right turns until you get to the houses on the right side. The last two hours of outgoing tide thru the next two hours of incoming tide is the best times to flip Tx rigged 4" worms along the outside edges.

Inside the NO WAKE ZONE is safer even though I catch the largest bass upstream of the NO WAKE ZONE. Just gotta be prepared for the large boat wakes.

Where does the no wake zone begin and end? The marina I am looking at launching at is the one that is at the back of the harbour, I am guessing it is in the no wake zone area.  I need some more feedback on the back end on the harbour where the creek meets it.  Is it worth fishing that area?  Am I better off launching closer to the Potomac and put the bass boat in the water instead of the canoe?

Inside the harbor is NO WAKE, and just after leaving, there is about 1/2 mile of hammer down just before the first 90 degree right turn. Then there is abut 4 miles of NO WAKE until you get to the wide part where the other two marinas are. You will be fine in a canoe, just turn perpendicular to the boat wakes and you won't surf into the pads very far. Paddling is cheaper than gasoline.

Another note, I just talked to a guy that has been fishing the Potomac a lot lately. He said the pads are going thru the mid summer dieing stages now, but they will return even healthier soon. I don't remember which creek he said is in that stage now.

Thanks guys, I am not sure if I will be fishing Aquia tomorrow or a location on the Quantico MCB, but I do appreciate the feedback.  I know a sweet spot that has a lot of pads and hydrilla and it is a real good producer of LMBs.

Interesting, I noticed this last weekend in the no-wake area of Aquia you were speaking of Wayne; in the stretch with the houses on the right (or left, if heading upstream). There, the pads are in a hurting state...brown and withered. As you might expect, we barely got bit at all in the area with the dead pads. Where the pads were greener, the bite was better.
