Shakey Head Hook Set Question

Featured Replies

So today im out at lay lake and im fishing a shakey head around a rocky stretch of bank and first cast, tap tap tap, i reel up and slammed. Fight him for 30 seconds or so and get him right next the boat, about a 6lb spot, a coosa river giant, and he jumps once just barley out of the water and the hook falls right out. What did i do wrong? i kept tension on him with out overpowering it. Im so mad i broke this fish off!!!

With a shaky head I usually just reel up the slack and pull into the fish real good. I think that gets the best hookset and I'm usually fishing it on light line and I dont want to snap it with a hard snapping hook set.

That's the way to do it.

There's really no need for a hard hookset with shaky head fishing.

Shaky head and Drop shot, I reel in, and just pull up in one motion, not hard, by any means.

They pretty much hook themselves.

Still shouldn't have lost the fish though ,I've made some very "dramatic" hooksets while shaky head fishing without a lost fish.

Are you skin hooking your lure? Does your shakey head have a quality hook? Are you using the right line and rod?

Those are the questions that come to mind. Anyway, it doesn't matter what lure you use, your gonna loose one eventually if not often on some days. Shake it off...you'll get another shot!

Another thought: You might have just had him hooked in some loose skin or a previous puncture. As hard as some spots fight, they can loosen up the puncture while fighting.

Your hooks may not be sharp. Tsk tsk tsk. Buy some picasso heads. They have good sharp hooks. I havent lost a fish yet on my shakyhead.

shaky head fishing I always skin hook the hook. To set the hook I point the rod tip towards the fish and reel in, when the line is tight I just raise the rod tip firmly. Never do I use a big hook set like with a jig.

For Drop Shotting I'm using a Gami Drop Shot hook and I just reel in the slack. The Fish generally hook themselves, but to be on the safe side, I do a quick raising of the rod.

I hardly ever loose a fish with either presentation.

In your post you said two different things!

That the hook fail right out and at the end you said that you broke this fish off.
